Serenaded by Angels

And the angel said unto them,

Fear not; for, behold, I bring you
good tidings of great joy, which shall
be to all people. For unto you is born
this day in the city of David a Savior,
which is Christ the Lord.

Luke 2:10-11

This morning my mind wandered to the 1950s and the true story of the massacre by the Wadoani Indians of missionary Jim Elliot and four others. I thought of the horror and fear that struck the hearts of wives, children and family left behind. Then I remembered the good things that a good God brought from this tragedy.

As I read Luke 2, I remembered the story told by several Wadoani tribesmen years after the massacre and their own salvation. They described a choir dressed in white amid glowing light high over the canopy of the forest and how, when they heard the singing, they knew they had done a bad thing.

Most who hear this story, believe it was a choir of angels ushering God’s martyred children through the portals of heaven. I believe that is true.

We see angels escorting Lot and his family through the streets of Sodom. We see angels ascending and descending a ladder from heaven in the account of Jacob in Genesis 28. We find angels shouting for joy as God speaks to Job about laying the cornerstone of the earth in Job 38. In Psalm 91:11 we are told that God commands his angels to guard us in all our ways. Luke 2 describes the angelic announcement of the Messiah’s birth, and Matthew 24 describes the angelic trumpet call and the gathering of the elect by the angels as the Son of Man returns to earth.

We should not worship angels. We should not pray to angels for, like you and me, they are created beings. We worship only the Creator. But, it is important to know that we are important to God and that He often uses His angels to intervene in the course of our lives—to guard and protect.

So, during this beautiful Christmas Season, as we celebrate the birth of our Savior, let us remember that just as every detail of the birth and life of Christ was planned and brought to fruition by His Loving Father, God has done the same for you and me and all people. He has numbered our days, and only He knows the last number.

How exciting to know that as His Child, when my number is called, I will be escorted and serenaded by angels through the portals of heaven to the throne room of my Father. “Fear not—good tidings of great joy” for all who believe. Have a beautifully blessed day, and don’t forget to look up.
