O God, you are my God,
earnestly I seek you;
my soul thirsts for you,
my body longs for you,
in a dry and weary land
where there is no water.
I have seen you in the sanctuary
and beheld your power and your glory.
Because your love is better than life,
my lips will glorify you.
Because you are my help,
I sing in the shadow of your wings.
Psalm 63:1-3, 7
Life can be harsh. Seasons of exuberant joy can quickly change to
seasons of total despair. Consider David—anointed King of Israel yet in this
Psalm we find him in the barren Desert of Judah. Hiding from his enemies, his
loneliness caused him to cry out to God. I seek you. My soul thirsts for you.
My body longs for you.
But in his despair he remembered—I have seen you in the sanctuary. I
have beheld your power and glory. And he determined—because your love is better
than life, my lips will glorify you. David encouraged himself in the LORD his
God.
David knew God’s faithful love. He saw it in action. He experienced it.
He remembered it. He knew that even in the midst of great sorrow and loneliness,
he could call on God for help. David recognized God’s faithful love and understood
that in his loneliness, he was not alone.
God’s faithful love has not changed over the millennia. I know what God,
in His faithful love, has done for me. He has ransomed me from the pit of sin,
rescued me in times of trouble, retrieved me from my captor’s hands and
regenerated my heart and mind as He pulled me closer and closer through His
faithful love. He continues to display mercy, kindness, goodness and grace in
my life through His faithful love. I know that I am never alone because of His
faithful love.
As I look back over my life, I recognize God’s presence during times of
great joy and great sorrow. God’s love remains throughout all of life’s
ever-changing circumstances.
Like King David, I have seen God in the sanctuary and beheld His power
and glory. I have experienced Him walking beside me during good times and bad.
I understand that His love remains. I can do nothing to make God “unlove” me. “His love is better than
life and I will sing praises to His Name.” I know that I am tucked safely
beneath the hem of His garment.
Do you know Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior? If not, today would be
a wonderful day to surrender your life to Christ and begin the life experience
of walking secure in God’s faithful love.
