Gaining Through Losing

“For to me, to live is Christ,
 and to die is gain.”
                Philippians 1:21  NIV

Gaining through losing—a difficult concept to grasp. It goes against every success building seminar this world offers. But those who know Christ know that it is true.
When a dear friend lost her battle with cancer, the loss I felt went beyond words. You too probably have experienced that pain.  But the things I gained in my life from having known her also go beyond mere words.
Watching her courage in the midst of the battle made me want to be courageous. Receiving the warmth of her spirit made me want to be more compassionate. Observing her as she spread smiles to those she met, made me want to be cheerful and friendly. I lost my friend from this earth, but the things I gained from her friendship live on.
The Apostle Paul’s words in Philippians 1:21 sum up the gaining through losing attitude. While I live, it is unto Christ. When I die, I’ll see Him face to face. “To live is Christ; to die is gain.”
Do you know Christ? If not, why not? What are you waiting for? If you do know Him, are you truly living for Him? If not, why not? What are you waiting for?
To lose my life’s will to the will of my Heavenly Father by living in Christ is the wisdom of gaining through losing. To give myself in service to others first is the grace of gaining through losing. To one day stand face to face with my Father and sit at the feet of my Savior is a reward of gaining through losing.
If you want to live a successful life, join me. Together, let us try practicing the concept of gaining through losing.
