Cure Depression - Drink Here!

“But whoever drinks the water I give him
will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give
him will become in him a spring of water
 welling up to eternal life.”
                       John 4:14 NIV

Early one evening, my husband and I rode our motorcycle to the lake near our home. On the way back, we passed a local bar. A sign posted on the property read “Cure Depression – Drink Here.” I thought of all the people who pass by that sign each day and believe it. Night after night they find themselves stopping for another drink and another—many of them falling deeper and deeper into depression as alcohol begins to take its toll.

My mind rushed to John chapter four and the encounter between the Samaritan woman and Jesus. She came to draw water  from the city well in the middle of the day in shame and possibly in depression. She probably did not want to see the glaring eyes and hear the whispers of those who knew her story. Undoubtedly surprised, she heard Jesus recount her history with these words, “You are right when you say you have no husband. The fact is, you have had five husbands, and the man you now have is not your husband.”

Excitement overtook any shame or depression she may have been feeling. She left her water jar and rushed into town to tell her story to all who would listen. “Come see a man,” she said. John 4:39 tells us that many believed because of her testimony. She came to fill her water jar hoping for a cooling drink of water. Instead she found the promise of an eternal spring of living water as she met the Master.

Have you met this man named Jesus? Have you taken a drink from the River of Life? Is the eternal spring of living water overflowing in you? If so, have you rushed to tell others who may believe because of your testimony? If not, I invite you to “come see a Man.” Perhaps it is time to spread the Word of John chapter four.
