I Will Glory in the Cross

But God forbid that I should glory,
save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ…
                             Galatians 6:14  (KJV)

The Cross of Christ! We see it displayed in sundry places and in various ways. It adorns the walls of our churches, sits atop steeples, and hangs in our homes and around our necks. It is displayed on fences, in gardens and across our national cemeteries.

It is precious to those who have accepted Christ as Lord and Savior and reviled by those who desire to wipe away any symbol or mention of God. An assault on the Cross now moves swiftly across our land. It began quietly, like a low-lying fog on a misty morning. But in recent days the anti-Christ’s of our nation began working openly and diligently to remove any sign of the Cross from our American landscape.

The Apostle Paul understood the true value of the Cross, where the clash between heaven and hell, sin and redemption, death and life took place. Never in doubt, the victory of the Cross was secured before the laying of the earth’s foundation. But the battle raged fierce and costly. The sins of mankind crushed Christ. He willingly gave His life; tortured until His blood soaked body must have stained the instrument of His death and the ground beneath His feet.

The Apostle Paul understood the cost of the Cross. I believe that is why he would write to the churches in Galatia—may it absolutely never come to pass—that I would glory in anything “except in the Cross of our Lord Jesus Christ”.

As the battle to keep the Cross in public view rages throughout both large and small communities in America, and as the courts allow more and more of our long-standing symbols of honor and hope to be dismantled, it is important to remember that no man, no atheist, no government can remove the Cross from the hearts and minds of the American people.

Today I encourage you to glory in the Cross of Christ. All else is vanity. Anything good that I may accomplish is from God. Everything good that comes into my life is from God. May we like Paul stand firm and proclaim to the world, “God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ.”
